london bus info
« on: August 24, 2008, 17:11:10 »
In a couple of weeks I will be trundling the caravan up to the Crystal palace to stay for a few days. As we shall be using buses to trampse around the capital and go to a few shows, I would like a bit of info about the cheapest way to travel. I'm ok as I have an old codgers bus pass, but my 'wife'. I hesitate to call her that in case I get done under the trades description act, is a bit younger and will have to pay her own fare.

The cheapest way I have seen on line is a day ticket, are there any crafty cockneys on the site to confirm this plus how much are they. Don't want an oyster as we will not be going up there again for a few years.

Bus only non of your strange underground malarky. Then I can see more and get of when and where we want to.

I only need to make her pocket money last 4 days.

Ace A few years ago when 2 of my daughters were working in a London Hotel they wanted me to spend my birthday back "home" so  to speak. They bought day tickets for London Transport and I thought it was a great way to get around.
When I go to my sisters in Kent she always gets me a weekly ticket which is such a great saving on day fares. (Won't be necessary when I go in October as  our local bus passes now cover all areas)
Whatever the cost hope you both have a wonderful time.

Anything less than a week and you might as well get daily travel cards. You will certainly see a lot more travelling by bus although underground is a much quicker way of traveling around London if you can bring yourself to do it. In central London though, I would recommend Shanks' Pony - get the best sights of all.

Enjoy your trip, I've lived in London all my life and it still excites me!

Why don't you just tow the caravan round London every day - I'd pay to see that!

A few facts about London busses.

If you stand at a bus stop on the correct side of the road you will notice a bus coming in the other direction every 2 minutes.

You will stand at the stop all alone for the best part of an hour before 3 busses arrive at the same time, ALL FULL.

Another bus will arrive with spare seats just as 200 people appear from nowhere and jump on before you.

No bus ever goes where you need to go.

Cambourne7 is right - Oyster is the way to go.  Otherwise it is a flat £2 whether you go 1 stop or several.

Why do I have a mental image of ACE dressed up as Paddington Bear, looking all lost and forlorn from the inside of his misted up caravan windows? It's only slightly disturbing.

...also (forgot to say) if you don't have an Oyster card you have to buy a ticket before you get on the bus at the dispenser by the bus stop - which quite often take your money but do not deliver a ticket. If you do get the Oyster card NEVER forget to swipe it if you use a "bendy-bus" and if you use it on the underground you will have to swipe it on the way in but NEVER forget to swipe on the way out....

Also Ace be careful not to leave your caravan unattended, with the prices of scrap metal sky high it might end up in the scrappy.  ;D ;D ;D
