Until last August we had a conifer which was taller than the house, the cats loved it, they climbed to the top, we could keep three daleks behind it, plus the wheelbarrow, it hid us from the neighbours BUT it completely blocked the sun from the living room, especially in the winter, so it had to go.

So we got a friendly tree surgeon who took two hours to cut it down to 7-8 feet; it took two days to remove the debris

We lived with this "tall stump" for the winter, just in case we wanted to grow something up it, honeysuckle or roses etc.

But decided the stump had to go too. My goodness, that was a mess.

So we were left with the stump, lots of roots and dry compacted soil. My son worked his socks off all summer, chopping, hacking and sawing at the roots and gradually filling in the bits and sowing with grass seed. It took a while to take shape. This is what it looked like at the beginning of this month.
