we can get wood chips free, straw quite cheap, soil for free, but I assume it would get very muddy, what does everyone use ?

aubiose or hemcore.  Not good though if your run doesn't have a roof as it's very absorbant stuff, absorbs all the poo but will get very wet if open to the elements

it will have a roof, but the sides will be open, just had a look, seems like good stuff, does it work out expensive ?

The hemcore comes in a really big bag and lasted me well as chickens tend to poo where there perch is so you can get rid of that and replace from elsewhere on the floor and top up with fresh from where you have taken from.  I've gone back to sawdust from the mill and I found it worked as well and no smell either same as hemcore.

I use wood shavings.  My hens got mites and other stuff when I changed to straw.  After treatment and since going back to shavings they have been great.  No more problems.   ::) ::) ::)

Hi Manics

I have woodchips in the run to stop the mud problem!  The fine ones that you can find by the roadside!!

I have actually had a lorry load delivered also - bargain £10!!  To replace the mucky ones in the run.

In the house I have woodshavings.  It absorbs a lot and is really easy to scoop out and put on compost heap.

I didn't find any of that aubiose stuff round here at all!  Sounds good but not round my way!

Old Bird!
 ;D
