can i grow cherry and normal toms together?
« on: March 25, 2008, 15:09:35 »
My youngest is desperate to grow tomatoes and i now have enough seeds to start a Dolmio factory.

Is it possible to grown Cherry and normal size together or would there be problems with pollination?

Would be nice to see them growing and have some small ones turn red whilst there are green ones getting bigger.

Thanks
Keep getting worried that the stuff I grow will taste nasty - or turn out poisonous!

Yes!!

Not that you would see! you would have to save seed for the following year to notice if this had happened.

No problem, but if you keep seed for next year I guess you would get crosses ??? I would be interested to know if this is the case anyone :-\

Tomatoes rarely cross.

Am I right in thinking toms are self pollinating (same as chillis)?
Is this the reason they rarely cross?

Yes the female and male parts are on the same flower so you rarely get cross-pollination.

Interesting....I had some that were home collected seed and appeared to be crosses. Some were rather large cherry tomatoes. I guess it was tickling them with the small paintbrush to ensure pollination that did it ::) Wifey says you have to do that. I would not bother but then of course it would be my faut if we had a poor crop :-X

The Potato leaf ones are slightly susceptible to crossing and the currant ones are very prone... so you need a bit of caution. Red Peach which is furry crossed out in my poly and lost it's furriness over about five years... and some of my potato leaf white developed a pink tinge...
