Which order to plant in?
« on: February 13, 2008, 16:58:28 »
I have 3 rows of raspberries across half of the allotment. I'm clearing down that side (slowly).
I've got onion sets, garlic and shallots to plant. Also far too many potatoes.

Any preference in the order in which I should put them in? Is there anything I really shouldn't put near the raspberries?

From that list I would say;

1)Garlic
2)Shallots
3)Onions
4)Potatoes

The reason I put garlic first is;

It would have been better planted in Oct/Nov but as you were not ready I would say asap with them in the hope that they will get a bite of frost.

I don't know where you are so it is difficult to be precise with the other things.

So say next month for Shallots & Onions

The potatoes can wait a bit you certainly don't want them getting frosted.

I'm in Solihull.

And .. apart from the timing, I really meant, is it better to plant one nearer to the raspberries or further away.

Hi

The raspberries spread by sending suckers up from the roots so give them a little room, a path width would be fine. As for planting near them I think any order would OK but you need to take into account possible shade from the raspberries (and potatoes) as Garlic, Shallots and Onions like to ripen in the sun.
