For those of you who like to try more unusual or exotic plants, here's a new (well, to me) supplier from the US I can heartily recommend:

A great selection of seeds, well packaged, fast delivery - I placed an order (for 10 packets of seeds) on 2nd Jan, it was shipped on 4th and arrived yesterday and to my delight there were three extra packets of seed free! And not just any old seeds either -  as all the seeds I'd ordered were for scented plants, the supplier had chosen the free seeds from the scented list too, and there was a hand written note thanking me for my order.

Does it get any better than this?

I do a lot of shopping online with US companies now because of the exchange rate - got say it is sweet being able to get quality stuff and such cheap prices.

I have bought seeds from the US and Canada for several years and have never paid duty. The value is always declared on the package. I received one this week that had $200 of tomato seeds in, it was declared on the outside and I wasn't asked for duty. I got one a heavy one last week that had 17lbs. of dry beans in it, and no duty.I have had 8 parcels in the last two weeks.I have paid duty on cotton fabric sent over but never on food stuff or seeds. Wether this is a fluke I don't know, but I have never paid any. XX Jeannine

In theory yes, in practice no.

I bought shoes from a US company and was charged duty, so perhaps it depends on the type of goods.

The supply of most basic foodstuffs for human or animal consumption is zero-rated. Plants and seeds used for the production of foodstuffs are also zero-rated depending on how they are held out for sale.
However, any seed that generally produces items that are not fed to humans or animals is always standard-rated, for example:
seeds or bulbs for growing flowers;
plants and trees mainly for ornamental effect; and
agricultural crops for industrial/non-feed use.
