Help to choose a holly tree / bush
« on: December 19, 2007, 13:48:28 »
Now this years holly prices have more than trebled I have decided to want to plant my own holly tree or bush in my garden. I would like one that is not prolific enough to take over everything else but has berries. Prickly or non prickly? Which is best?

Any variety ideas?

There are dozens to choose from, but remember you need both male and female to get a good crop of berries (female only). Probably the best one of you can plant only one is Ilex J.C Van Tol, this is self fertile. You can expect to pay anything from £2.99 to £299 depending on the size you wish to get  ;D
Gardening is the great leveller.

what about asking people on freecycle if they have some holly they dont want, which would resolve your imdiate problem?
