So what am I doing wrong?
« on: April 20, 2007, 06:51:18 »
These chillies have been static for about a week. Temp 70F-ish. They are moist - on capillary matting.

What's up Doc??

They are just lazy?-I`ve had some problems this season with Habenero and Fatallie-they just refused to germinate and the Tabasco took ages to get going

I've seen a lot of difference between Tropical Heat and Bolivian Rainbow. The former were all up within a few days and are now at the 6 leaf stage while the latter are still at the 2 leaf/poking through the soil stage. Both sowed at the same time.

What variety are they?

I am hoping for some success with my capsicums this year.

Sowed them too late last year :(

Neither sweet peppers nor chillies have germinated so far.

Mine all germinated and they have been living in various parts of the house. The ones that have done the best are in the bathroom - I presume that the warmth and steam are the rwason why.

My peppers took ages to germinate, but maybe was just me being impatient and  now I am at the same stage as you. They are doing absolutely nothing,  just 2 leaves and no sign of anything further, they've been like this for a couple of weeks.

Think maybe I will put them in the bathroom and see how they like it there, don't think it is a question of humidity, but willing to be proved wrong.
Smile at your enemies.

It makes them wonder what you are up to.

Think the lack of progress of the chilli seedlings is to do with temperature fluctuations. Sure I've read somewhere that they are pretty sensitive to cooler temperatures, especially when they drop at night to below 14 degrees, and are much, much more sensitive than tomatoes.

Tim, I was beginning to think it was just me! I've never grown peppers or chillies before so accepted they may be slow to germinate - about 8 days so not too bad I thought. They've looked like your pic for about 2 weeks.
I'd have thought they'd have their 2nd leaves by now. They are not being particularly pampered though, on the kitchen windowsill. It's been very warm in the day but really quite cold at night so that perhaps explains why mine aren't exactly racing ahead. Yours are in a heated prop though aren't they? So with a steady temp I wonder why yours are not growing?
Maybe they are just lazy!

I find that cool heads and warm feet is the answer.

Apart from when the greenhouse temperatures rise/fall due to the action/inaction of the sun I keep my peppers on the shelf above the hot bed in good light and at about 50*F.

Generally there is enough heat radiating from the hotbed to keep them at around this temperature after dark.

I was wondering if the root restriction you have created might be a problem.

I find that peppers tend to form a good root system prior to top growth thats why I get mine out of the plug trays and into 3" pots a.s.a.p. after germinating.

Like yours I find mine take a week or two to start putting on top growth but when they do they grow at a fair rate of knots.

At 2 seed leaves, I thought it a bit soon to pot up - especially as no roots are breaking through the Jifffys.

But despite this, I have now potted them up & it remains to be seen?

Hmmm, thought it was just me, Tim! My peppers did really well initially, two nice little seed leaves, then seemed to just STOP.

5 days later they seem to be producing the next tiny leaves, so I am just leaving them and crossing fingers.

I thought it was only mine that were sticking. Perhaps I had sewn them to early, but since potting on they are starting to look quite good. Same with the aubergine and squash. Perhaps  they don't like being all squashed up in the small pots eh! Glad you lot are having the same problem.
