Celeriac - any advice?
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:15:44 »
I have got some celeriac seedlings ready for pricking out. Has anyone ever grown it? what should I do?
After last years disaster with twenty-headed celery, is celeriac easier?

I think you will find Celeriac isn't hard to grow ..I would prick them out into 3inch pots or  the larger type modules... Grow them on a bit and plant them out early to mid May ... They like a bed which has had plenty of muck dug in ....
To grow well they need a sunny position  ..They don't like lime as they prefer soil to be slightly acidic ..... Jim
Cheers .. Jim

Thanks Jim,
I am back in Liverpool tonight and will prick them out tomorrow and keep them in the frame for a while.

Just to reiterate the previous two comments. In essence, moisture is king. Both celery and celeriac are bog plants. Therefore, digging in muck helps to retain moisture .. but watering (and they cannot have too much) is key.

I grew celeriac last year. It grew really well, but, was pretty much ruined by slugs, which seemed to like living inside it. So I'd recommend a bit of slug protection.

I grew it last year for the first time, it was really good and stood in the ground right into winter, cant say that I had any trouble with slugs, but I did water it really well right through the dry season
Just one more polytunnel, just one more chicken coop.
Just one more allotment.
