I noticed in the pond today mating frogs - is this early?

WOW! it would be for mine!

Think mine normally start in March, (will be interesting to see if they find our new pond this year ;D ) but it has been unusually warm this so far, wonder if they will produce spawn.
This is always interesting to watch.....and to add to! ;D

Mine are usually March too DP but I noticed activity of some sort today. I wouldn't have any worries about them finding your new one. I dug a new pond last autumn and my biggest frog leapt in before I'd even started filling it, slithering down the liner, where it had to stay for the rest of the day until the pond was filled. ;D

I looked out of my bedroom window this morning and there was a lot of activity going on in the pond. With my binoculars I saw about 20 frogs. Thinking it would be a good idea to take a picture, I grabbed my camera and walked very slowly towards the pond. Unfortunately they saw me coming and all disappeared. They had made two lovely tapioca puddings though. ;D ;D

I remembered that I had posted about frogspawn last year and looked it up.

I haven't seen any frogs in or near my pond since the one that my cats liked to play with died.
They must have brought him in through the catflap at least 5 times.

My goodness a wee bit early. Ours was March last year, but I suppose it is not surprising with all this mild weather, though we expect much colder weather next week, so winter could still be on its way. Have cleared all of our ponds out so we are ready for them when they do start. Thanks for starting the thread Okra. Shall we keep it going like we did last year, so we can keep track of them? ??? busy_lizzie

Crikey that is early for frog spawn! :o Hope we don't have too many cold days to kill them off! Would you try and retrieve the spawn and put it somewhere warmer or just let nature take it's course?

I left it last year and it survived some very severe frosts so I will not be moving it. We had thousands of tadpoles nevertheless and that is probably after the fish and the birds had enjoyed their fill.

oo, this is so exciting - we dug our pond in the summer and came across three juvenile frogs late last year so we will be waiting with baited breath to see if we have some new guests this year.

saw a small one the other day when i pulled a plant out. my spawn was miles behind every one elses last year as my pond doesn,t get much sun but i had loads of froglets every where ( next door wouln,t cut his grass because it was alive with them) so i suppose it dosn,t matter

Checked the pond this morning. . .not a frog in sight. Haven't heard them at night either. Usually they decend on the pond in their hundreds. Last year they even spawned in a fold in a tarp I keep over the bikes. They found a bit of water in there at ground level and it was full of spawn. Late frost probably halved the spawn then. Transported one frog to the allotment on Friday in amongst a bag of leafmould. He/she was a peculiar colour, yellowish orange, bloated and lethargic. Sign of getting 'in the mood'?

It is still too cold for ours - not one in sight. But don't they have some sort of antifreeze ability, so they can easily defrost once the weather warms up and they are perfectly alright? Our frogspawn has frozen and gone on to produce loads of tadspoles before. :) busy_lizzie

No signs of any activity in our ponds as yet.

We have a small 'wildlife' one and another larger one beside it which has carp and goldfish.

Last year they spawned in the bigger pond.

Two days ago I thought I would take a look in my new pond. Lo and behold 2 lots of frog spawn! Yesterday they would have been covered by the snow we had, hope they survive.

We have got 2 ponds, one with fish, a fountain etc but no frogs. The other one is left as a "wildlife pond"
When I looked this morning there is spawn in the wildlife pond and very active frogs :o but nothing in the other pond. So from this I hope they are appreciating our hard work from last year in building them their own pond ;D
I am in the far south west, with no snow or ice.........yet ;)
