I pulled up around 100 onions today and more than 40 had white rot. It's days like this that make you wonder why you bother.
Well here's to next year. :(

it's just one of those things supersprout but at the time it was very dis heartening. my onions were great last year which was my first year.

That is so disheartening Vez!  After all that work and effort - poor you!!  Our onions for this year are not a patch on last years either, don't know if it is weather conditions or what.  Ah Well!! We are always saying "there is always next year""too, and there is, so lets hope for better luck!!  ::) busy_lizzie

Our onions are very poor compared to last year...tiny, in fact!!

So - we are buying Argentinian ones because our farmers haven't lifted yet!!

I thought I heard on "The Big Dig" TV show that ground with white rot was unusable for 20 years ??? Or did I interpret it wrong ???

What a shame - it so upsetting when things like that happen.  Don't give up.

My onions are small this year, my shallots, in the same bed, were huge though. Weird year.

It's been the other way round for me; my shallots were small but all the other alliums were fine.

Then he dumped the whole fetid lot on the nearest vacant plot  :o

My shallots were fine and they were right next to the onions.
I took mine along to our fire barrell for cremation.

That's absolutely shocking behaviour!  I hope that a little bird had a word in the right ear about him.  How selfish to inflict a devastating disease on the next plotholder who will probably be a newbie and start planting onions!

Well, I've had white rot on a rather small allotment, and although my onions and shallots are rather small, and in more or less the same area as the white rot, 2 maybe 3 years ago, not a sign of it this year. 20 years???.

I lifted some onions today, they just came straight out of the ground, the roots were gone completely, there was signs of white rot on some and some had rotted away from the roots upward.

Most plants seem unaffected, I presume the rot is not currently active because of the high soil temps.

None of my shallots, leeks, garlic nor over wintering onions were affected.

Is there anything less serious that could have caused these symptoms (living in hope).

EDIT: actually I think it most likely Fusarium Basal Rot, as on examination I have found some bulbs have rotted up inside while the skin is intact.

I thought ten years isolation was enough? Don't tell me it is twenty as I'm on year 6 and counting!
