Hi Shilton

I'm afraid I can't help you with this one.   Have been looking into it myself though, currently toying with the Dobies catalouge.  Have bought some raspberries from Wilko this year - they look good but still too young for fruit.

I haven't gotten around to buying any myself yet but have often looked at the Ken Muir site - http://www.kenmuir.co.uk/shopFrame.htm there seems to be lots of choice and they have downloadable fact sheets about varieties, care and growing habits etc.

Hi Shirlton,

Re Belinda's comments about Ken Muir, I can thoroughly recommend their site. I bought my fruit trees from there a couple of years ago (apples and pears) and they're excellent. A bit more expensive than some, maybe, but the service and quality couldn't be faulted.

Cheers,
Rob ;)

I have used Ken Muir too and get good stuff.

But I have also used RV Rogers of Pickering:

These guys are an old nursery and the quality of their stuff, service and price is very good and I heartily recommend them. I tend to call them to discuss ideas and then they often walk around thier nursery whilst on the phone to me and pick out the order as we talk.

I bought a blackberry and blackcurrant bush on-line from a nursery recommended on this site. The blackberry didn't survive the winter and the blackcurrant, although looking healthy has not produced any fruit. Shortly after planting last autumn, I bought another of each kind from a local garden centre. Both of these latter kinds are fruiting away. I personally wouldn't buy on-line again. It wasn't Ken Muir by the way.

Off topic - sorry folks.
Just wanted to ask sprout why his signature indicates Notts, yet the map in his profile shows the English/Welsh border?

I've used Deacons (Isle of Wight) as well as K Muir over the years. It is so hot that even my dwarf Pomegranate, grown from seed is setting fruit... I know they won't develop but will probably make good baubles for Christmas!

Belinda,

I don't know ???
I can recall once trying to 'map my profile' but gave up. The borders must've been as close as I got!

I bought strawberries online - the plants were ok, but almost doomed by the incompetence of our local postie. Is it that difficult to ring a doorbell? ::)

Wouldn't have minded them leaving the card saying parcel had been returned to the sorting office, so couldn't be collected for 24 hours, if they had also managed to observe the fact that the package was plastered in labels saying 'plants unwrap immediately' and put a note on the card. Lucky the growers had told me they'd be sending them out then, so I'd assumed that was what the parcel would be.

Still, at least they came to the right house for once.

On-line/mail order is a great idea, as long as your PO is more with-it than ours.

Hi Shirlton,

This place was about the cheepest I could find for gooseberries and currants but I don't know about their delivery charge at £6.95. I am thinking of odering in the autumn.

The company I ordered from was one of those recommended above by JennyM, Buckingham Nursersies. Obviously Jenny rates them so perhaps I was either just unlucky or incompetent (or both!).

I've got my strawberry from Reeds nursery and they were excellent! Healthy plants and very very well packed.

I'm thinking about ordering some fruit trees from them later this year.

I also used J Parker on-line shop, but my feeling is that it's a bit of a lottery and ....... never again.

I second therecommendation of Keepers Nursery - our allotment and garden is full of good quality fruit from them, and they know what they are talking about.
