Little Gems
« on: May 20, 2006, 17:46:35 »
My first sowing of little gem lettuces are big enough to eat - not massive yet but one will be enough for my sandwich(!) - anyway - how do I harvest them??  Do I take out the whole plant or if I cut them at the base will they regenerate?

Crickey - I can't believe how little I know about this stuff - I promise I do know that eggs come from chickens and milk from cows - not from Tescos!!   :-[

I either cut the lettuce leaving a stump which will produce some small leaves and little shoots which you can also harvest, or I pull out the entire plant.  It depends if you are going to be short of lettuce in a few weeks time, by then the stump will have a little crop of leaves to fill the gap.

Thanks EJ - I think I will just pull up then - I have some more sowings to take me through and also some cut and come in the conservatory.  Cheers!
