I am thinking of using peat pots ( the cardboard looking ones) when potting on my veggis. I would be intreasted to know of any problems with this method ?

For my beans I use inserts of toilet roll.

I don't like peat pots- they always seem to make the compost dry out too quickly. I too am using toilet rolls for beans.

Doesn't the soil fall out of the bottom of toilet rolls??? ???

Do you then plant the bean and the toilet roll into the ground?  I have heard of lots of people using toilet rolls but wasn't quite sure how it worked!!

I tried using peat pots for my lettuce last year, and seemed to do O.K. When we dug them up though, no roots had come through the peat! The pot was chocker block full of roots, but somehow the peat had stopped them spreading.

I'm using plastic pots this year to get (almost) everything started. They might not seem as environmentally friendly, but at least I can reuse them.

Don't like peat pots for same reasons.

And, in passing, peat pots are NOT environmentally friendly!! = Tim

aaaggghhhh nuts, got given loads and loads of peat pots from the shed lady, now you lot tell me they are no good.  What about if I cut the bottoms out of them so in effect they are just like loo roll tubes?

I didnt like them, they steal all the water from the compost - I guess cutting the bottoms out would work EJ  ;)
