1st Pic of our plot this year!
« on: April 02, 2006, 00:01:08 »
It feels really good to have at something to take a picture of at last!
To the left 14 x 15' rows of early spuds Aran Pilot, Nadine, Lady Christl, Red Duke of York, Charlotte and in the foreground Aquadulce Claudia broad beans and Garlic. To the right leeks (Musselburgh) and Japanese onions, shallots, red baron, stuttgarter giants and sturon onions.

Just the other 3/4 of the plot to fill now!!

Hope you're well pleased mothy, your plot looks great and it sounds as if you'll not go short of grub :D Just having a quarter look so good is an incentive to keep going with the other three ;)

Lol...thanks for your kind words!!

Yes Adam...it's raining now...it's quite a free draining soil though and we've had a very dry winter.

Last year was my 1st year...I cleared what is actually my father in law's plot for him last winter...that's him in the picture. He is letting me get on with it all this year, but we are much further ahead than last. By the end of spring last year we were digging ground and planting straight in it. This year it is all dug and waiting to be set  :)

I need to keep on top of the weeds this year!!

Your plot is looking great Mothy, the soil looks nice to work, I always say that once the initial digging as been done , like you done last year the plots are a lot easier to look after the next year as long as you keep on top of the weeding.
Hope you have a successful growing year.

All the best   Richard

Thanks Richard, the soil is lovely and light on most of the plot. It measures approx 30' x 150' so is a fair piece of land and does vary a little. Where we have put the new potatoes is quite "twitchy" and I'm hoping they will help to clear that as we earth up etc.

Because last year was a race against time to get the plot dug and planted up, I was shocked by how vigorous the annual weeds were. We did what we could but didn't  have enough time for the hoe.......hoping to put that right this year.

We've also built a frame to try and keep the pigeons off the cabbages etc  :)

I find the number of annual weeds coming up does diminish a bit, but they'll always be a menace. One of the best ways of keeping them down is by mulching like mad. We get masses of autumn leaves and grass cuttings delivered to the site and I use that on everything.
