i want a greenhouse (variation on a theme)
« on: March 23, 2006, 07:27:49 »
i've got my wad in my pocket (albeit a very small wad) and am itching to press the "buy now" button, but thought i'd ask your opions first.

i'm looking at a Norfolk-Greenhouses Ultimate Popular 6 but am wondering how stable/durable these are.  my garden bears the brunt of small hurricanes sometimes so needs to be fairly robust.

anyone got any experiences to share ?  should i sacrifice size for strength or have you got one of these  in the garden that's already "lasted for years".

thanking you all kindly.

Hi MrsKP

I have just put up the ultimate 4 at my plot.
when i was putting it up i thought this thing will never last as it wobbled all over the place :-\ but once i glazed it it was solid 8)
My mate has had one for 2 years now & he is happy ;D
But they do take a time to put together ???

cheers tel.  did you build it per the instructions, or did you add some extra bits to beef it up ?  i've seen people mention additional clips for bubblewrap in other posts.

what is the back vent like, and did you get an auto solar roof thingy ?  and without the need for a base, how does it stay secured to the floor ?  the last thing i need is it take of a la Dorothy in the wizard of oz.  :o

muchos gracias

Yes as per instructions. the back vent is just a bit of plastic 2mm thick i need to work on that . ???
i built a 4"by 2" timber base then pegged it to the ground & fixed the Gh to that.
No roof thingy :o

It is cheep & cheerfully i will try to get a pic of it to show you if you want

that is a big problem up here KevB.  i've been keeping my eyes peeled for a while now and the nearest second hand one i've found is about an hour away but i don't think my nerves would cope with half a ton of glass in the back of the car, especially as i found out from a very nice bus driver today that my brake lights don't work  :o.

so my early saturday morning will now be spent down the garage  :-X bad words bad words

 :'(

ok ....... clear "glass" panels like the norfolk ones, or polycarbonate safety glazing ...... pros & cons please.  sorry to be such a pain, but you guys know better than i and i want to learn from your mistakes  :P

cheers tel, i was just wondering whether the polycarb would offer a bit too much shading.  maybe i should have a little more faith in my sun/summer weather.

Indeed,  a Woman of Property 8)

Great stuff, Mrs. KP - congrats!  ;D

new hoos last august which came with NO useful additions.

ok the decoration was acceptable for the next 5 years (well it would have to be with our decorating skills/energies) ....... so i'm playing with my plot  ;D.  once the money's gone it's gone, so best invest now while there's some still there.   :P

some of the nasturtiums went in today, i did try to wait a bit longer but thought dammit, you're going in  ;D

I can't remember what make mine is MrsKP, but it came with four sprags, one for each corner, which it recommended sinking in concrete (or some such aggregate). I didn't use a base of any sort and haven't had any trouble yet - five years, and I too am troubled by the wind. If you see what I mean. :o
Don't sacrifice size. Whatever size you get, it won't be big enough next year. I think strength is 'designed in' these days.

Back again. Glass vs polycarb: I read somewhere that glass allows a broader frequency of UV light through, which apparently is good. But to judge from the enormous number of polytunnels in use, it can't be so much different. I suspect that polycarb might be more expensive to replace though, assuming that, like most plastics these days, it is programmed to degrade and go brittle after a few years. Also the weight of glass will make it more of a problem for the wind to shift.

Geoff.
