I HAVE to agree with you there Tim, it is the one bird call that grinds on my nerves! They sit on our weather Station and coo away, wish I had a gun! ;D :o

The other birds don't stand a chance if the collared doves get in
first.

Ha if you think they are bad I only have two, you want to see our wood pidgons 4 of them. If no food on the table they stand and it looks like they stamp their feet and look straight in through the window so funny.
Then line up on the fence while I get the food cost a fortune but have to keep filling table up for the other birds.

Oh no GA! I love them. They sit on the roof above our bedroom and wake me up in the morning. Much better than an alarm clock.

Agree with Gardenantics.
Loved the programme where Hugh Fernley went out on a pidgeon shoot( with a female companion) & bagged 150 in a day before they cottoned on. Used the breasts only, cooked 'em up, & made a tidy profit at a local market. I bagged a few on my allotment today - a good feed tomorrow then!

I am old enough to remember the Bill Oddie program where he stalked a pair of collared doves, introducing them as "a rarity in Britain"

Doves are such gentle birds, waiting on the top of the bird table roof until the smaller birds have had their fill. I really enjoy having them around and find their cooing soothing too.

I'm of the one-for-the-pot brigade. Lovely to eat. B. nuisance round here - I live opposite a wood and they've colonized the place. And I HATE their cooing - they don't seem to ever finish. Them and the b. magpies.....grrr
BUT one of my chimneys doesn't (or didn't) have a cowl on it, and one year a pigeon must have fallen down the chimney & landed behind the gas fire in my bedroom (which is blocked off except for the opening for the flue)...poor thing could be heard hollowly cooing and fluttering...called the gasmen out......wrecked the fireplace.......rescued the pigeon which promptly flew madly round the bedroom cra**ing everywhere...there's gratitude for you ::)

Funny how differently people react to the same thing - it's the noise of sparrows I can't stand. In my old place, I got so bad I'd be running outside flapping a tea towel several times a day to shoo the little tinkers off. Now in my new place, there's a rookery 50 yards from my back door. They make a heck of a din, but somehow I love the sound (even during the night). No accounting for the diversity of humanity, eh? :P
