Women and films etc.
« on: January 08, 2006, 17:49:15 »
About to offend everybody (who is female) but don't mean to really.  I am talking generally and not specifically and I am fully aware that nobody fully fits any stereotype.

Anyway, here goes.  Why is that women and some men develop fascinations for certain films etc and that these films are often very unworthy of such adulation.  D for instance must have watched Grease about 10-15 during her lifetime.  Now, correct me if I am wrong, but I would not say it was a filmographic masterpiece.  The cinematography is nothing to write home about.  The story is, to put it bluntly, a tired cliche and the music, well lets just say it's not to my taste)  I could understnd this fasciantion if the film had a multilayered multifaceted story line but it plainly doesn't.  Other examples that spring to mind are Rocky Horror Picture Show, Saturday Night Fever (this list will inevitably grow)

PS This is a serious request to understand a subject I currently have no empathy for and that when I try to discuss with D she just thinks I am having a go.

Blimey, you do like to live dangerously!!  ;D Can't be much help, I don't think cos don't like them either! I loved the Bourne Supremacy, Hunt for Red October, but I also love Sci Fi, such as Underworld, and also Last of the Mohecains...but as to why the ones you mentioned are so popular, I have no idea. Though I'm still trying to fanthom out why some women take 20 mins in the loo.....sorry! Think you're best to nod and smile, cos if you're watching Arnie and War films, she's probably asking herself the same question.... :-\ ;)

Ady, I suspect she may be obsessively projecting her unrequited need for romance and other irrational forms of inter-human intercourse onto trashy Hollywood twaddle of the seventies. Hope this helps.  ;)

BTW, Saturday Night Fever was pretty good...

Ahhhh Grease!   8)   I too can watch this over and over and for me I think it just has to do with great memories of the time it was first released.  I remember going to see it at least 3 or 4 times and then trying to recreate the whole thing on a stage of orange boxes and scaffolding planks in the back garden with my friends - I was Sandy - of course !

Now what I don't understand is how my OH can watch Agatha Christie or such over and over again - I mean he knows who did it?    ::)

Mind you as a Steve McQueen fan I watch The Great Escape every Christmas....just in case this time he will make it over the wire!

Have I totally confused you with my female logic.....or non-logic Redclanger or is it my OH's Agatha moments that have you  ??? across the page??  :)

I'll watch any film me - old B&W, war, westerns, chick flicks, action.  Not overly keen on horror but can manage a while from behind a cushion.  What I just can't stand is getting half way through and realising it's rubbish but not being able to bear not watching to the end.  Rubbish it may be but I have to see the end and all the while knowing I am wasting an hour or so of my life...... :-\

Got to preview with my reply then decided not to say what I'd thought, and just say that in our house, it's the bloke who prefers to rewatch and rewatch and... half the time it's some dreadful thing with no acting class and no sane plot and...

well I guess it's horses for courses.

I used to watch certain things avidly but I made the transition back to real life and so can't get addicted to films etc any more.

Whether female or male methinks most of us don't necessarily understand why folks feel the need to watch TV, if I do watch a film or TV programme I generally fall asleep coz I'm so bored.

I do understand the need to escape and dream but  this is done either in the garden or plot or I do read alot................... and re-read.

Oi Lots ..............................are you on topic......................oh sorry forgot its the shed :-X

doc Dong..........................i love worms ;D
