Okay, to get the ball rolling, one that we probably all know, and either love or hate!  The free cd's that come through the post, or you can pick up at supermarkets make rather good bird scarers.  Hang them from bamboos stuck in the ground at angles and they swing, catching the light.  Or like me, adorn your trees with them (great home made Chrissy decs on my lottie!) to keep the birds off your fruit.  However......I thought I was clever and used them also as plant labels, writing on them with permanent marker....the marker washed off!  So much for permanent!  Good job I knew what was what.

Yep CD's work on the other lottie I had a few years ago they used them.
also Vidio tape tied to canes up and down rows twist everyso often and the wind catches it it hums birds dont like it. New one is better but if using an old one expect it to snap on times but recycling is fun
So when I got this lottie I used the CD's and Vidio tape you should have seen the faces they had never seen a lottie decorated before had to explain to all.
Being on the end plot for all to see sure some had a chuckle.

must admit l was a bit of a non believer about the discs but sure enough they do work very well ;D :o

Okay, just to bring this back up the board, I am now banning CD's from being used on my plot.  The darn magpies are a pain!  They apparently dive from the sky chasing the spinning CD's and they sit in my apple trees pecking at them.  They were meant to scare the birds away from my soon to be developing fruit, and all they seem to do is encourage them.  Mind, I wonder if Magpies would eat the currants a goosegogs?  Guess they probably would. :-X

 Sorry press the wrong button. Please can you tell me how do you drill holes in your CDs please I tried but was afraid it might crack so I wasn't successful. Is there a special tool that you used. TIA.

I used a normal drill yesterday and it worked fine until I bent the drill bit- think I pressed too hard!

My Mum's next door neighbour uses the bags inside wine casks to scare birds. If you drink cask wine...

Re: the CD disks, I have been using a skewer heated in a flame to push through holes! Works really well ;D  Oh and hang them on a single string, cos if you double it through the hole, it snaps the string because it wears it away.if you see what I mean! Dottie P

I get a stack of about a dozen cd's and drill through them all together, this avoids the rough edges...also found that fishing line works better than string, its tougher and lighter which makes it less prone to getting tangled.

AOL disks seem to be available at B & Q.  I always want to grab a handful but only take 4 or 5.  I've suspended a couple from the centre of the the cane wig wam.  They've got to have room to spin though as the one's over our peas failed to stop the birds muching them.

I read that you can use CD's as a slug-proof mat under pots or even as a slug-proof surround on a raised bed.
