Anti Mole Bulbs
« on: November 04, 2005, 11:15:59 »
Any body know of these or tried them.
They ar described as a naturally occurring native Swedish bulb that secretes a smell that humans can't detect but that moles & field mice find offensive.

Thanks

Don't know - but there has recently been a mole thread?

All I can add is this - from today's paper -

In Belgium and France you can buy a "détaupeur" which is a device that blows them up on contact - explosive charge on a wire in the tunnel connected to a battery supply.  Moley comes along, makes contact and bang! instant death.  They are clever blighters though and some times it takes a few days to blast them.   Got a sneaky one tunneling in the lawn just now.

Not here!  They just kick them out.  We tried so-called anti mole plants, plastic bottles for wind noise, musical bits out of birthday cards, sonic buzzers, humane traps etc and nothing worked till we came across this détaupeur device which is effective and terminal.  It's been eighteen months since the last invasion.

Anti mole bulbs? hmmm

Live hand grenades?  ;D

Only Jokin Folks!

There all sorts of things to use for moles like a plastic bottle filled with water a little to help with the wind vibrations in the soil underground to deter the mole.

instant death?

moles??

*kitty likes moles like she likes badgers*
w-e-e-ell....i spose it might have a relevance if you have a HUGE amount of moles.

or a very small veg patch that they are disrupting.....but-instant death????-wont they just move on eventually?
of their own accord?

is it necessary to blow them up?

We have tried all the firendly methods, including live traps which have never worked.   I have caught two moles excavated by my cats and released them in a wild area across the stream where they can burrow as they like.

In my garden, they have tunnelled through many ornamental plant roots, killing them as a result.  They also undermine our large lawn.  I have a problem with my lower vertebrae.   If I step on uneven ground or in a hollow such as is made by their tunnels, I suffer excruciating and crippling pain.  One of these days I will be permanently crippled by such damage to the spinal nerve so yes, it is necessary to blow them up if they won't leave.

Since when was a pesky mole any different from the greenfly we like to see eaten by the ladybirds and tits; the slugs we cheerfully drown in beer, cut with scissors, stamp on, feed to hedgehogs and thrushes and frogs and toads; the grey squirrels people try to outwit to keep them off the bird feeders and spring bulbs; the fox we all want to keep out of the chicken shed..............

All these deterrents, many terminal for the offender, have been freely discussed on these and probably every other garden message board without opprobium for the people involved.

Moles in my garden cost me money in lost plants and are a severe risk to my health and mobility.   I have a 10 yr old daughter and am not quite ready for life in a wheelchair.  I deal with all my garden pests organically and encourage beneficial wildlife to take refuge in my garden but if moles won't take my friendly hints to leave, I feel perfectly justified in resorting to extreme messages.   It's an average maximum of 2 a year here anyway.

we-e-e-ll.....
i think its the difference between sensible pest control   and annihilation for the sake of beauty.
i mean..i think if i were to decimate everything for the sake of order and neatness there wouldnt be much left of nature...there would also be little left of the food chain..however if one could  choose to alter an established viewpoint and work with rather than against nature .
gawd.that does sound pompous dont it?but i cant think how else to put it.....

animals just will not conform to mans strictures.

however i am not the one losing the plants....  :)

and no,i'm not a vegetarian. :)

and why the hell should they kitty!

but on the other hand if Obbelix is right and it's fine to resort to extreme measures when gentle hints are ignored,  next time we get the thugs vandalising our surgery it will be OK to throw the odd grenade or three at them.  Sounds good to me, or maybe it's only OK to blow up little furry creatures and not some moron who actually takes pleasure at smashing someone elses property.

not how to trap moles.
not how many grenades to use.
not how to look after a lawn.
BUT DO ANTI MOLE BULBS WORK PLEASE IF YOU KNOW  :'(
