which tomatoes?
« on: October 26, 2005, 14:09:34 »
Please would someone tell me which are the best outdoor tomatoes to grow? I was just about to 'click' my order through when I realized that I didn't know wether I had ordered suitable tomatoes.

It all depends on a lot of things...

Cordon or Bush
Small ones or big ones
For salads or for cooking

With so much blight around this year I would recommend at least one early maturing one and one normal one, that way at least youll get some red ones before the dreaded B comes.

I treid Ferline this year, specifically because of it's reported Blight resistance.

I have been very very pleased. Large fruit, good colour and not too many seeds and nice flavour. Also very easy to peel when cooking with them

And yes they have resisted blight and I still have 3 plants outside with tennis ball sized fruit on the ripening.

It is a cert on my list for next year.

You can get them from various sources, in this years lists I have seen them in Tuckers and T&M so far. Sure others have them as well.

I tried ferline this year, got them from DT Browns.

Mine hadnt read that they were supposed to be blight resistant and withered as of august bank holiday.

Hi Jerry,
I’ve grown 'Ferline' (from T&M) for the first time this year and have been thrilled with the quality, quantity, and weight of individual fruits.

T&M say to expect fruit of up to 5oz; I've had them up to 12oz.

Thanks for all your advice, I will opt for ferline and a cherry type.
Will have to wait for post each morning so OH doesn't see how much I've ordered along with the toms! :o

My ferlines succumbed a couple of weeks ago but I had plenty of fruit from them before that, I'll definitely grow them again next year

I grew Ferline in the greenhouse and at the lottie, the ones at the lottie were much better than the inside ones. I had blight on my plum toms next to the ferline but they didn't succumb. Livingstone Oxheart is another good one.

I'm also happy with Ferlines, a very tasty tomato. While the blight was all around us in August, the Ferlines kept going strong but finally did get it at the very end of the season.

There is now a second blight resistant tomato: Legend, it's a bush type available at T&M. I'm going to try that one too next year.
I've never grown bush types before. Does it mean that I don't take the suckers off and just let it grow the way it wants to with no tying up?
