Topic: which broad bean?

I would like advice please on which broad bean to plant this October,  if you know of one you would recommend,  please tell.

Aquadulche. That's what I grew last year and will be planting again this autumn. Very hardy. Good yield. fantastic flavour. No blackfly until right at the end of growth.

You could also try the sutton, it is a dwarf bean.

i am glad you recommend the aquadulce, aqui. already bought the pack ready for planting. when should they be sown? i am away first week of october and dont want to miss the best time......though i think mid september is probably a bit early? :-\

i grew 'the sutton' this year but they didn't do very well, was thinking of starting off some 'aquadulce' this autumn so thanks for the recommendation - my lottie rep said they should be sown in November though - is he right?

Aquadulce is very hard to beat in my opinion. I have grown it exclusively for a number of years and it does not fail to deliver.

Sutton is OK but will not yield as well or taste as good IMHO.

I grew Bunyards Exhibition and liked them as the foliage wasn't very tall, no blackfly but I think that was because I grew mine much later than everyone else and I pinched out all the growing tips and stir fried them  :)   I notice that some of the beans have really tall foliage which has to be supported which is a bit of a faff

As well as the Aquadulce, I have Bunyards to sow in spring too.

I think they grow better in the colder months so its november for me. I think I will try root trainers this time as well.

If you sow them too early, eg early October, then the plants can grow too much before the hard frosts, and are then cut back severely. I did this one year, thinking I was being clever, and lost most of the plants. The plants always race away in the in the spring, and nature won't be forced ... everything will come together in its own time.

Aquadulce for me too! Started mine off in loo rolls last year, to beat the hippo sized slugs, pigeons etc, and they did really well.  DP

Me too! I plant them in mid October, have grown them every year and have always had great results. ......so far...touch wood...oh no, probably jinxed myself now......   Lottie  :-\
