:'(Had the jab
« on: November 05, 2003, 18:34:34 »
Hi all
Had a tetanus jab today and  had to have diptheria as well ( same jab though ;D)
Nurse was very kind and didnt hurt.
Must be my age or something though - have to have 2 more :'(
Feel much happier 'bout clearing brambles and spreading horse muck now. So thank you Hot Pot for saying it didnt hurt and the person who 'pricked' my conscience in the first place ( if you'll excuse the pun.)Sorry cant remember who started all this and if I go out now to look will lose 1/2 hours typing.

And there was I thinking you were talking about the `flu jab I had this morning. But please do tell, Ciderself, why did you HAVE to have a diptheria jab as well as your tetanus jab?

I dont know Hugh - which makes me feel even MORE stupid. Should I have demanded tetanus only???
I havent heard of a diptheria outbreak anywhere. But then am always last to hear any such news. 'specially important stuff.
Thank you Doris - I'm sure if you've had a recent tetanus you should be ok. Best get your diptheria jab though. :o

Sounds as though you were lucky to get out without an MMR as well. Perhaps it`s the latest Directive from Brussels - "If they won`t join the Euro, give them diphtheria injections! That`ll teach `em!" (spoken with a franco-german accent of course).

Who knows what on earth was in it.
I am feeling a little light headed. Cheaper than going down the pub . May go for another one tomorrow!

;)/cider...... Pleased to see you've got yourself protected....mine was Monday & I too had the diphtheriea vaccine combined....if you look on  the tetanus thread...(wherever that might be)...I've explained why you now have to have dip. as well..

I felt a wee bit "under the weather" for 24 hours or so....not as nice as a few bevvies down the Pub....but now seem back to normal....whatever that is! ;D.....

I'm still struggling to find all these different threads and keep "losing" where I saw something.....takes me ages to trace everything.....there must be a quick way rather than keep going back to "Home" every time......told you I was new to computers too....... ???...H.P.

Exactly the same HP.
Think I'd better go get some beauty sleep. The next 3 years might do it.

The reason why you had Diptheria as well as the Tetanus, Ciderself, is because it's a combined jab. It's the way children are given their immunisations now. One arm gets the (now vindicated)MMR  :(and one arm gets the Dip-Tetanus :o, then just as they're about to scream their head off :-[, the nurse breaks open the polio vaccine and pops it on the back of their tongue :-X!!!

Love, Palefire

Sorry Rosebud, but the Influenza Vaccine is a dead virus strain (reared in  chickens), and consequently it cannot POSSIBLY give you `flu.  However, the vaccine is 75 - 80% effective, and it is therefore theoretically possible for up to a quarter of vaccinated persons to catch `flu despite having the jab.  However, I repeat, this is not in any way because of the jab, but sheer bad luck.

However, I must say that if you started with influenza on Monday, followed by a `very nasty chest infection`, you wouldn`t be almost recovered on Thursday; sounds much more like a simple short term lower respiratory tract infection of the type which abounds at this time of the year - nothing to do with `flu - and which you would have got anyway.

Daughter was offered the jab at Uni, refused on the grounds of cowardice, only one who did not get the 'flu. And by the way I confess it was I wot started the anti tetanus thread. Glad people are taking note. Lost a very dear friend to a rose thorn many years ago.

I cannot believe that a health service would go through the expense of offering flu shots and advising people in risk groups to take them if your chances of getting the flu are the same or even increase, as some of these testimonials seem to imply. (It's more likely that these people were hit by a strain not included in the vaccin.)

Makes me think of the story of the granddad who lived to be 100 years old while he smoked since he was 12. So smoking is not bad for you.

It's like the one of the aunt who had a wart removed and died the next day............ run over by a bus. So, don't ever have a wart removed.

Back to tetanus. I think we all agree that everybody should be vaccinated against it. The advice that somebody received; to take the shot after an injury is total B.S.!!!! The tricky thing with tetanus is that most danger lies in the fact that it can be the smallest of puncture wounds that causes the disease. Wounds that may not even be noticed. With nasty, big abrasions that hurt like hell, your chances of getting tetanus are actually less. No!!!!!!!!!!! you cannot get tetanus from the vaccination. If you have fear of needles, the more reason to take this shot, can you imagine how many shots you'll get if you should get tetanus and you still may not survive.
