can potato diseases affect asparagus?
« on: September 18, 2005, 09:28:44 »
On my new plot the easiest place to plant my asparagus is going to be in the ground cleared as I harvest the spuds. The potato plants all seemed healthy when I took the plot on (left by previous plotholder), and I've had a good harvest of what appear to be Nicola, Maris Bard and Pink Fir Apple. As the tubers stayed in the ground over 2 seasons its not surprising that there was at least one rotten potato at each plant, but all the rest of the tubers were healthy.

I'm wondering whether it will be OK to plant the asparagus there considering the few rotten spuds? I know that asparagus is related to lettuce not potatoes, so hopefully it should be ok, any thoughts?

I am no expert on matters of crop rotation and veggie diseases, but I would say, so long as you removed all the spuds, the last thing you would want are volunteers sprouting in the  middle of your asparagus bed, and you enriched the ground and improved drainage, if drainage were an issue, then it should be fine!
