Yippee ;D-as one old enough to have seen them ripped out I can now report that around me they are being planted again-thousands of natural species planted around the fields here over the last week-OK the cynic in me smells subsidy but who cares in this instance?

They are layering some of the hedges around here. A fantastic sight to see. Had a go at it once when I was on a Rural Studies Course, hundreds of years ago. Not as easy as it looks and them machete things is sharp. Good to see hedges coming back. We are lucky in that they are still popular round here.

Hedge laying done properly looks beautiful and good for the birds. Good to hear they are planting your way Cleo but who is going to pay someone to tend them or will they let them grow like ours here.  Where a tractor and a chopper hacks the hedges and you can see straight through them and thats in summer.
So its back to the gardeners to fend for the birds and feed summer and winter to give them a chance we reap the rewards they say thanks by eating the bugs.

I have an 89 year old friend who still wins hedge laying prizes!! The hedges really are a beautiful sight ;D

I love all those old practices like hedge laying and coppicing, its great to see them coming back again, and would jump at the chance to have a go at them myself.

If i had the land would plant a native hedge, and in time try laying it.
