A few allotment pictures
« on: June 30, 2005, 13:15:30 »
Took my camera with good intentions, then got carried away with weeding, planting, watering (!) and sowing!

The beans are 'purple queen', and the brassica is brussel sprouts 'red bull'.

Potato flowers, no idea on variety of spud, as these are volunteers they I know I should have dug out, but they have come up smack bang in the middle of my celery and celeriac patch!

Peas are twinkle, these were pot grown as my first 2 sowings were eaten by my resident mice population.  They are in heavy dappled shade, so are taking their time, but this is perfect for succession as they are filling out just as the next load of alderman are in flat pod stage.

And as I was oiking out the last of my blackfly infested failed broadbean plants, look what was feasting.  I pinched the top out and positioned it near my greenfly infested swedes, so once they have had their fill of the blackfly, they can move on! Nothing like a varied diet.

Yes you do Roy, you want an infestation of them!  Ladybird Larvae munching their way through my blackfly!  The more the merrier on my plot please!  ;D

The big scary creepy crawlies Roy.  They pupate into our lovely ladybirds, but before doing so, they munch their way through hundreds of aphids!  You see, the advantage of being a dumb blonde and not understanding, therefore not using bug sprays means you have lots of good things doing some (note I said some as they haven't done much on my blackfly infested cardoon plant!) of the work for you!  ;D

The black dots are presumably the remains of the blackfly. there don't seem to be any left, and those ladybird larvae look extremely well fed.

Indeed Robert.  There were actually 6 larvae on the broadbean tip!  I noticed them all over the plot on different plants, and actually rescued one (how sad am I!) from red ants, whose nest I disturbed and they blamed him!

It's a shame that pea's not called Tinkle!  ;)

Ladybird Larvae are pretty mean looking. If I was an aphid, I run and run and never stop if I saw one coming! It's not sad rescuing them. I'm always fishing ladybirds out of my pond and carry them (and the larvae) around the garden to an area where they can feast!

Impressive (as usual).

Slugs ate my Purple Queens before they could even get to the flowering stage.
gone to pot :D

Great pics EJ  :) Especially of the ladybird larvae!

I rehomed a couple of ladybirds from my allotment to home, to help with the aphid infestation on my loose-leaf lettuce and other tender things there.

Wish my red bull sprouts looked as healthy as yours! (thanks for the seeds :))
Lottie-less until I can afford a house with it's own garden.

Some more taken today!

Firstly, my leek plantation.  Went a little overboard. ;D  Then what happens when you forget about a leek! Fruit cage protecting my Glen Moy raspberries.  Redcurrants looking like strings of rubies.  Globe artichoke patch, and alderman peas.  View through my blight control tunnel, also home to lettuce, bronze fennel, spare cabbages and squashes.  Then comes my tomatos.  Looking good, but everything is still crossed!  :-\  And spuds....hmmm..plenty there!  ;D  Bronze fennel.  Some florence fennel has started to bolt  :'( but the bronze is looking great!  No sunflower comp winners this year - darn slugs!  My squashes are planning to take over the world this year! The view up to the apple trees from my shed.  This is half on plot one and the pumkins growing in my compost heap.

;D Emma sooo glad you posted a piccy of Ladybird Larvae as I have discovered I have loads on my April Cabbage, after the Aphids no doubt. ;D

If you hadn't posted that piccy I would have squished em, so thanks for that ;)
