Forgot to say manufacturers aren`t very generous with the size of the memory cards they supply with their cameras.  Amazon have good deals, my 128MB SmartMedia card was £24.79, you can take hundreds of pics  :)

So difficult to answer.  'Specially if you're buying blind on the web.
1. You don't need more than 2 mp for everyday pics.
2. Easy  to hold - ie with a 'bump' on the right.
3. Clear display screen.
4. Then think of how wide or not you want the lens - zoom? and can you add other lenses? Macro?
5. Do go for a big card - esp if on offer.
6. Go for a firm that offers free backup - Canon, for one.
7. Whatever you get will be mindbogglingly better than your last and you'll love it!
8. The gas bill can wait?
9. Small is not necessarily clever. = Tim

On second thoughts, 2 middle sized cards can give you more flexibility - esp if you are frequently downloading? Batteries run out v quickly. Re-chargeables are useful. Or mains lead.

This question is often asked on my work newsgroup.  They always rave about Canon, Nikon Coolpix and Olympus for low priced good quality digital cameras.  I'll find the thread again tomorrow and see if their recommendations are within your price range.

One good place to look is http://www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk

If you've got a Jessops store near where you live you could go along and have a play with the cameras and the good thing being that they also price match.

Argos had an offer on when were looking at buying a digital camera but all our local stores had sold out within hours so toddled off to Jessops who price matched Argos (printout proof from internet and a short phonecall from them) and managed to get a Minolta Dimage 7i half price for £449.

A lot lot more than we intended to pay for a camera but it is the dogs b*llocks.

:-/Can't do links and clever stuff like that, but when I bought a digi camera before Christmas (with Father Christmas money!), I found a load of useful  info on Amazon, of all places.

I def agree about the comment re. getting charger, as they use batterys really quickly!

I had mine narrowed down to 2, about the same price, and apparently almost the same. The difference was that one had optical zoom, and one had digital. Digital zoom isn't great, so def go for the optical if you can.

By the way, mine is a Fuji FinePix A405, which I got half-price at PCWorld online. Good for a basic digi camera, and was under £100.

Enjoy shopping around!

Tina.

:-/Hang in there, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait!

All the reviews that I read about Polaroid were good! I wouldn't worry about size of memory if you are going to download often, that's what I do and have had no probs so far.

Do we get a photo of you when you've got it?

(From someone who NEVER has her photo taken, and is always the photographer!!!!).

TTFN.
