I planted spuds last year and had reasonable results, I laid them on their sides as  they weren't chitted so I  couldn't tell which way up they should go. My question is, should the potato be stood up (when planting) and if so how do you tell which should be the bottom and top. Thanks.

I just dig a hole and drop it in. I'm a long way from being convinced that faffing over which way up it is makes any difference.

When you chit them, the shoots grow towards the light.
If they are put in upside down, they will change direction.

If they are unchitted, it doesn't matter which way up they go.
