Best bread pudding I ever had came from a bakery in Sherborne in Dorset, they used the unsold bread and cakes from the day before.  Unfortunately no idea of the recipe but it was quite crumbly and moist and very spicy.

Bread and butter pudding is totally different, it is creme caramel with body and a crispy top.

But thanks all for inspiring me.  OH likes puddings.

Was interested to read Rosebud's recipe - that's the exact same one I'm sure my mother and now my friend use/d......no milk, just water; suet rather than butter, and white sugar (cos that was always in the cupboard).

I don't have a TV now and haven't for quite a while, but when I did I remember watching The F Word...the competition between GR and a guest making traditional dishes always seemed to be won by the guest who'd produce the 'original' version over GR's modern take on it?

Some of the recipes here reminded me of that - for me, Bud's recipe wins hands down (not that I think the others aren't OK).
