Potatoes in store

Anyone tried this one?  Or heard of it?  

"An old trick to reduce sprouting in storage is to put old apples on the floor under the spuds. Apples produce ethylene gas as they mature and eventually rot . . .  It encourages potatoes to remain mature and dormant, and discourages new young growth."

I hadn't - and am going through a sack of potatoes tomorrow rubbing off the shoots!  Something for next year, maybe.
