the other week i bought a dudhi from tesco, cos it was on whoopsy for 10p i thought i'd give it a go.  it is a gourd, or a green squash and from my research on the net it is mainly used in asian cooking, so i made a curry with it.  it was lovely, flesh a bit like aubergine but firmer.  one person on net said it could taste bitter, but mine didn't.  another person also said her mother grew it when she was a child and one year they had about 100 fruits off one plant.  has anyone grown this? and where could i get seeds from?

If there were seeds in it, Use these!

It is often cheaper to take seeds from an exotic fruit than it is to buy a packet of the variety. You get to eat the fruit too.

I do it all the time and get good results.

Tomatoes, chili, peppers, melons, pumpkins, gourds, squashes.

Also I buy seeds from the supermarket for herbs, coriander, fennel especially.

Mung beans for 'beansprouts' for salads and stir fries.
ready in less than a week, grow on wet paper towels.

The dried peas will also germinate and grow.

I grew Dhudi last year. Regarding taking the seeds from the shop bought fruit the problem is that the best ones are still only young unripe fruit so getting good seed is chancy.

Last year was a bit cold for them and early growth was slow but they finished with about 5-6 kilo, much to the annoyance of the lady that gave me the seeds.

My seed tins are up the plot at the moment but there may be a few spare seeds. Won't know till tomorrow.
