porridge

i made some porridge to give to the hens for supper but this morning it looked as if they had tried it but  they hadn't eaten it ?? is it because they hadn't had it before?? also they don't seem to be drinking much is there any thing i can add to the water to make it tasty for them just a thought i make them mash (with water) so are they getting enough water that way??advice please thanks
