There is a scale somewhere on the web where You measure the circumference and it gives You a good estimate of weight..We tried it last year  and it was only a pound or 2 out ...Cos You wont balance a 150lb+ on a pair of bathroom scales . ..cheers ..Jim...

Sounds like the competion is hotting up 
We managed a 9st 6lb pumpkin last year which my 7 year old took to his school , they held a guess the weight event and he had to stand in the assembly and give a short talk on how it grew.
I wish i kept the seed from it now though
I plan on growing Dills Atlantic giants again this year .

I put mine in a guess the weight competition and raised £100 for Alzheimers. and also the guessers could bid for it so that got rid of it too

The arrangements sound pleasantly informal, so it should be a lot of fun. I caught my neigbour at lunchtime, and he told me he has some spare 'hundredweight' seeds, so I am all set now! Just need to decide the best time to germinate them.

Have got my seeds ready!! They are the ones that I got from America...Conneticut fields and Howden Hope they like our climate. Maybe as I am going to be brave we should have a catergory for the  smallest pumpkin

Ooooh only caught up with this....I'm in! Don't know what I'll be growing yet. My son picked out some "ghost pumpkin" seeds last week so I guess he's growing those this year!

I plan to grow on what looks like an old compost heap that was covered in nettles last year.

Aha, nettles are normally an indicator of rich soil, so you will be a contender for the prize then Heldi?

I've planned to grow a pumpkin on there since last summer...purely because of the nettles curry.  I wouldn't hold out much hope of a prize though. There are experts out there!

Hello! Nice to meet you all. What a lovely site! And what fun the competition will be! In 2004, my dad (he's 91 now!), my daughter and I had a 'giant pumpkin race'. None of us had ever 'pumpkinned' before and we only grew the  'Hallowe'en-sized' type and the best was a mere 14lb. Last year we thought a bit bigger  - two more 'competitors' joined and we sowed 'Mammoth' seeds. I only have a tiny veg. patch now but was delighted to win with a lovely specimen that weighed exactly 70lb. (I do have a photo of it, being ridden by one of my grandsons, and will try to get one of my computer-literate family members to post it on the site some time!)

I think I may have gate-crashed your party. I don't have an allotment!!! Didn't mean to break the rules - just got swept along with all the enthusiasm. Not very bright, am I?  I'll enjoy watching from the sidelines! Best wishes.

 I didn't know there was a competiton.

 I got some Pumpkin seeds on Monday Thompson & Morgan " Dill's

Atlantic Giant." They cost me £ 2.69.

I have never tried growing pumpkins before so will have a go.
