I saw monty don using one of these to plant potatoes on GW.Though it looked like a handy bit of kit so i checked them out on Amazon & was amazed that they cost so little. Mine arrived yesterday & it's a bargain.

hi ,just had a look myself and yes they are good value, looks like it will save your back also.
Jolly, hows that hoe going, I was thinking of getting one, have you a better picture of one. ;D
I've just looked at the reviews on this item. Looks to good to be true at that price but having used an azada for nigh on imprenatable ground it should be a very worthwhile tool. There were complaints about the handle being loose. We were told to soak ours in a bucket of water to get it to fit well.
I don't suppose it's s/s at that price?
I've just ordered one Gannyjanny, what have I got to lose at £8.50 enc p/p. ;)
The reviews are mostly excellent, out of 49 only a couple of negs so no nothing to loose.
i've got one and it's great for the money ,i did find the shaft was a little loose when i first got it but i just banged it on the floor a couple of times and left it in the water barrel for a day to swell the shaft a bit.
i've just ordered another one for a fellow allotment holder, it's so much fast for digging a trench for potatoes and it saves your back, excellent can't complain for that sort of money ;D :)
Tony has just looked and ordered one. We were looking at one on the plot today.

shirl, didn't you fancy one like Salinder showed you yesterday? :o
That one with the teeth was far too heavy for us Betty. He had another one today that was just like this one on Amazon.
He did offer to let us use it to finish getting the final bit of the plot cleared but we declined due to the mares tail.
It will be great for hoeing up spuds and making trenches.
At £8.99 its worth having one.
I have got one of them Shirl, but due to my untidiness and carelessness I can't find it!
It was a bit heavy for me to use, but Colin really liked it.
I've got an azada and it makes breaking new ground much easier and faster, easier on the back and slices through bramble roots! Mine was more expensive though - £8.99 is great value.
Well i used it at the allotment this weekend & it was fantastic :) The shaft is nice & tight & dosnt need soaking to swell ;D. It isnt heavy at all & seems to have a decent enough edge to it. Ive just used it to plant my potatoes & it did the job very well. All in all im very pleased :)
I bought one of these with the wide blade about 20 years ago..

A fantastic tool and still going strong today (well yesterday technically!)
You complete bunch of *******.
I've just gone onto amazon and bought one for my OH.
Darn it!!!

always thinking of others, that's you aj - generous to a fault ;D
bought one a few years ago and gets my vote!
Jolly what have you started, this could put the seedaholics in the shade at this rate, mines meant to come tomorrow and they are £8.50 not £8.99 don't let Shirl make out she's getting a dear one. ;)
I have one made by Chillington hoes, Also I bought a ridger hoe from them which I found to be even better Both were dearer than Amazon but the quality is better from Chillington. When you get it first bang the head on firm and then apply linseed oil, Apply linseed oil to the whole length of the handle at the end of every season that way it will last you donkeys years. I used one that my Grandad bought when he was a lad but some thieving so and so pinched it
Don't let Shirl make out she's getting a dear one.(Quote by Corny)
Mine is 8.50 as well and is coming today so they say
no hoe's ,only jalo's. ;Dhttp://www.gardenersclick.com/gardenphotos/myprofile/avatar/10004/103131

Jolly what have you started,
Only trying to be helpful ;D
I got one in a French garden centre over 10 years ago. Still going strong with the original handle.
Well mine arrived this afternoon, I thought the head would be smaller so I'm well chuffed
Its 170mm across the head
That's 6 3/4 inches to the oldies
The handle is lacquered so no linseed oil necessary
The very top is untainted so I'm humming and Haring whether to soak it or not
The handle is tight, what do you reckon. :-\
That would be Binette pour creuser in French.
;D ;D ;D
;D ;D ;D. OH has succumbed, he's got a bit fed up with me telling him how many people are getting it. You were the last straw CK ;).
Tell him it's only £8.50, it's hardly going to break the bank, ;) for years I've been looking for one and a few weeks ago I discovered they have them for sale at the hardware shop in our high street, they are £27, I went in to get something else and spotted it when I left the shop, but the geezer was so rude I thought F##k him I'll look elsewhere, >:( £8.50 a bargain, hang on I haven't even tried it yet. :-\ ;D
Mine hasn't arrived yet :(
Yours has probably got to be delivered on a horse and cart, takes a bit longer I reckon. ;)
I've been using one for the last eighteen month and they do make light work of many jobs on the lotty, but like other folk at the time on A4All we bought ours off E-Bay from a company in Portugal and I was really surprised when my Azada arrived inside seventytwo hours, happy digging, :)
I broke my handle. But I shall make one out of a holly stick. I will buy another though as my friend is always nicking mine.
Mr Smith we got our azada from Portugal. I have a friend who lives there & her sister went to visit so brought the head over for me. It cost about £5. A wonderful too.
I've just give it a go and the handle did come lose after I went to war with some marestail, but it did the job, I will soak it in a bucket, is it overnight or 24 hrs. :-\
We did our azada overnight CK.
I've soaked it for about 20 odd hours so we will see tomorrow when I try it out
Go on Duke take the plunge. ;D ;)
must have missed something so what is this used for?
Well mine came this morning.
No wonder it took longer to get here. It was brought by a nice young man with a turban on. I reckon he must have come all the way from India.
Tony gave it a go this afternoon.
Thankyou for sharing this with us Jolly

But what did the excess baggage cost, :)
Oh thanks Kev for the thumbs up and info on this hoe ;D.....I must say it seems well worth 8.50 *squids*!!!
Well, mine turned up today - but it went to the depot at Ilkeston ::) so i went and picked it up.
OH is chuffed to bits; we went straight out to try it he dug a trench in 10 seconds [in a bed that didn't need a trench but anyway].
Couldn't stop playing with it. I'll be he wishes he wasn't working tomorrow and could spend the day using it up the lottie.
Roll on the weekend when he can go over some of the beds up there
What a great buy. Thanks :D
mine arrived today handle looks quite bashed and the head is a little wobble on it what have people done to make it a little tighter?
Just hold the handle with the hoe-end lowest, a few inches above a concrete surface, and bang it sharply down a few times until it stops rattling and feels tight. Then, soak the business-end of it overnight in water. A large mop-bucket will do, as long as the tool itself is submerged. :)
Happy digging.
Mine felt fine when I tried it, but when my lad's mate tried it, the handle broke straight away.
I found a replacement that fits 'near enough' but is a bit heavy. Still, as I get used to it, it's proving to be a really useful tool.
Brilliant thanks i will give it a go :)
yep i think it will allow me to crack on with getting my half of the garden sorted so i can get more stuff planted.
looks like were going to have to relay the patio so i am sure it will come in handy there as well :)
£16.23 at time of posting this - looks like Ive missed out. Really must spend more time on A4A forum :D

Still a bargain though.
Got mine at the original bargain price and it is fantastic- been digging up an old lawn at home and it really makes it easy. I've not even tried it on the allotment yet.
And now they are £24.00!!
£24.99 now. ???

Looks like we must have started a run on them so they have bumped the price right up ??? Good job most of us got in early.
Yup, I asked my daughter to order one for me over 2 weeks ago. When I asked about delivery, she said she'd paid over £20 for it and the delivery date keeps being moved back............ still waiting!
This might be one downside of 'tinterweb, it is hard to shout bargains from the rooftops quietly :(
Found these from Chillington Tools - any good
http://www.chillingtontoolsonline.co.uk/set-of-3-small-digging-hoes-p66
Seem's a good price
That seems like a great price, even better than the one i found. :o
redcoat you can still cancel if the orders not been dispatched i think :)
I used mine 1st time last night and whilst i have some new aches it really did the job got loads of soil up and cleared enough space for 3 more slabs to be laid at the weekend. Helps now we had a bit of rain though.
Yours was £8.50 Jolly, Chillingtons are £15.90 still a good deal though. ;D ;D ;D
My mate at work was asking about the hoe, so I looked up the price for him and the site has it "currently unavailable" :P
I wonder why ? ;D
I think Jolly had something to do with it Shirl, I think he's keeping his head down in Manchester somewhere. ;D :D ;)
;D

Sorry cambourne7, I missed your reply to me.
I still don't have the hoe. The message on the site eventually changed to 'product not currently available' with no apology. My daughter really had the hump. How can they do that to you, when 7 were 'available' when she ordered it?
I've got the hump too. She owed me a tenner, which was why I suggested she ordered the hoe for me, so now I have no hoe and no tenner either! ;D
If you type in Silverline digging hoe there seems to be several places with the exact same product, varying from £7 ish to almost £20. Obviously the lower end of the price range won't include delivery, which seems to be about £4.95.
However, several of them also state 'out of stock', but there is a site called APK tools which is selling for £7.60 inc. VAT plus delivery of £5.00 (ok if you need other things in the same delivery, otherwise seems out of proportion for the price of the product). Will be seeing what else they sell that I can't live without to make the delivery worthwhile!
We have been using Azadas to clear our allotment as they are much easier to use than spades. We got ours from
http://www.get-digging.co.uk/tools.htm
They have different weights and sell the short handle version which is very usefull for getting between plants. The price includes postage and a good quality handle.
I had been looking for an Azada for a long time as I can not use a spade very well and found the link from Real Seeds a couple of years ago.

I am thinking of ordering these (above). Has anyone else ordered these. Just wondered how they are for size. Is the bigger one wide enough people find?
