hi folks, its my 40th fast approaching, and we have decided to have an eighties themed fancy dress party, bit of a cliche i know but itll be fun! just wondering about the food, any ideas...? so far we have chicken wings, the obligatory cheese and pineapple hedge hog, chilli and guacomole...any more?
off to check ebay and see how my bidding on a pill box hat is going........
Sounds a great idea. How about: -
Prawn cocktail, garlic mushrooms, garlic bread, black forest gateau, vol-au-vents, angel delight, quiche lorraine.
Don't forget the sausage rolls :)
thanks both, brill ideas, how could i have forgotten about the magnificence of a vol au vent!
rach
x
Smash instant potato
R Whites lemonade (i'm a secret lemonade drinker)
Um Bongo (they drink it in the Congo)
Oranjiboom (?) it's a lager not a tune
vesta chicken curry or was that the 70s
I remember the 80s as being "nouvelle cuisine" and high on presentation and fancy ingredients. Prawn cocktails and cheese and pineapple are more 60s and 70s.
Anyway, there was also a backlash to grandma's cooking so you could do big cottage pies, steak and kidney pies, proper sausages and mash and for puds anything from bread and butter pudding to spotted dick. All easy and fairly cheap to do in large quantities and serve as a buffet.
I always take a couple of big cottage pies to family events and they are alyways eaten quickly ;D
Did they used to eat at 80s parties? I thought they just smoked long black fags and snorted coke!
A party 7 and a handful of scotch eggs. ( no offence to our scottish friends on here :-X )
;D lewic and kev!
OH just got very excited at the mention of party sevens, signs of his mispent youth methinks! wonder if you can still get them?
Dont forget ....................RITZ CRACKERSSSSSSSSS!!!
Duke ;D
Twiglets.
Was Fondue 80's? Time goes so quickly ;D
I'm going into an advanced sulk now... this was before Lactose Intolerance... :-[
Did anyone every get into a party seven without needing to repaint the ceiling... :-\
I am of course far too young to remember party 7's but I have been told that if you opened them cold they didn't spray!!!!!!! Its the room temp ones that caused the damage.
Keith Floyd, rip, was the eighties celeb chef. The only one I really liked, not like the fools who make it up as they go along now. Get one of his books and do real eighties food with the glass of wine in hand. We did not do foody thing then too busy making ends meet with the kids, but I'm almost sure bootiful was in with Bernards turkeys. So you could do a really naff buffet with all them pre-chewed turkey shapes. I also think donkey burgers were on the menu in some of the shadier dives.
French bread pizza, Findus (or probably Bird's Eye these days) crispy pancakes, Pop-tarts and Cremola foam.
Just seen a Cmoet advert for a soda stream machine.... that brought back memories! ;D
Got to have salad with grated carrot and cabbage, apparently it is very eighties according to a customer at the restaurant I work in, we still do it there :-[
Dont forget the plonk... Ace lager. (White tin with blue writing I think, the cheapest stuff that was available 8) 8))
was that 'lambrusco' time?
love this thread, I missed most of the 80's..had 2 kids and one on the way, brain got fried from lack of sleep ;D

Blimey I had forgotten about that drink didn't they have an issue with the duty to pay on it as the alcohol was so low in some batches it did not register. It does make nice mixer for brandy. This thread has bought home that it does not seem like yesterday with the kids always underfoot (love em really) ;D
For you that still have the little uns. Make the most of them, they are soon gone.
Lambrusco was 70s. Chardonnay was the wine of the 80s and 'designer' beers.
Yuppies and dinkies (double income no kids) arrived in the 80s.
"Hagar (the horrible)" and "Follow the bear" beer

Yeah but if you're careful you can make the leftovers last several days surely..... I mean there's a fair amount of meat on the average six-year old these days.......

I bet you was one of the tight s0ds that brought pomagne to a party then drank all the good stuff ;D
You are the only one who has admitted knowing the stuff, I've lost count of clearing up after a 'bit of a do' and ended up with a cupboard full of pomange and lambrusco and empty bottles of gordons and glenfiddick. ;D
I think I will go and 'gently down a merrydown' Now that shows my age.
Ace, being a lot younger them than your goodself, I was only a teenager in the early 80's and everyone used to bring a bottle of pommy and the whole lot was drunk before I went home.
Now merrydown is a different matter. :P ;D ;D ;D
