Title: Price increases
Post by: RSJK on February 04, 2007, 13:49:10
Went down to my allotment association shop today to buy some  compost and fertilizer and was astonished at how they were going up in price, apparently it is all down to the increase in electricity prices over the last few months, ah well I suppose we have to suffer the increase.

Prices of stock at our site shop have not changed. But rent is going up £5 to £20 per year. Still not bad though.

No increases this year at mine - rent is £18.50 for a full plot as it was last year.

:o :o :o :o Thats a pricey plot, worth every penny but still alot more than most of the sites I know.

we are having to pay for our plots for the first time this year... think it will be fairly nominal though as its just to cover diesel for the tractor and some bits and pieces to cover the costs.

BLo*dy hell!  :o :o :o
Do you have 24hr private security company guarding your site for that? That seems steep. But if there is a huge waiting list I guess they have you by the short & curlys. Either pay up or they can fill the plot anyway. Extausion all the same.

My rent is going up from about £65 to £80 (that's a slightly higher rate than others as I'm not a resident of the council). But as my first 6 months was free and I haven't paid anything yet I'm not complaining. Still a bargain I think. :)

ours went up from 25.00 to 50.00, because the bl**dy club want 25.00 per plot off us, and membership for the club, and we have to be members, has gone from 2.00 to 10.00..just as well we like being there..still, it's cheaper than a gym  ;D

Our site's in North-West London.

The plot price isn't the only cost to have increased either - the cost of site keys has just gone up from £1.25 to £1.50, and our membership fees have just gone up from 75p to a whole quid (gasp!)...

.. but, as the advert says:

The fresh air, the home grown fruit and veg, the education, the sheer joy -

PRICELESS!

;D ;D ;D

Exactly Manic! I figure I get in a free aerobic bike ride and then some free weight training. ;D Though you don't come back from a gym with mud in your hair...

oh man I am so lucky at only paying £4.60 a year. Guess living in a village I've taken it for granted but listening to how difficult it is for some of you guys makes me feel lucky and I intend to not let it go to waste. Guess it's all to do with demand and supply.

Our plots cost £39 pa and next year will be £42. For that we get water and nothing else.
The self managed sites collect the rents for the council and get 15% of the total back to run their sites. Is this common practice around the country as it doesn't seem worth the bother of being self-managed or am I missing something?

We have a half plot in Sutton Coldfield which costs us £8.50 and 4 miles away we have a full plot and its £10. Same council as well. I couldn't afford to have one if I had to pay £150. Wouldn't have any money left to spend at Wilkies.lol

mine is just under £40.00, half of which is for water.  We get free woodchip & leaf drops and have a shop.

Same with meths... £5/litre in B and Q.

I pay £20 for 150 square metres on one site, and £8 for a similar plot on another. If I want over 150m2 I have to pay £40, but like everyone else I think it's worth it.

Si, what do you do with your meths? We had a 3 hur power cut today and I asked OH if meths would work in our storm lantern as we had no paraffin, and he nearly had a heart attack. Far too dangerous.

We use meths to light our 'Tilley' heater, which we used to warm up our allotment field shed if we have a meeting and its very cold (like Wednesday this week, when it was sooo cold but the heater soon warmed it up).  The Tilley burns paraffin but you have to use meths to light it and then it burns paraffin under pressure.

Thanks. I half remember having a simple small meths cooker that you could fry a couple of sausages on (I think) when camping.

Was this chap wearing a three cornered hat and sporting a pair of pistols in his belt? Our allotment shop charges £9-50p for TWENTY Litres, it must be the bargain of the year.

nah he was about 4' 6" with NHS specs and could fit in my pocket and was reading from his script.  I don't blame him so much as the suppliers.  I'd cleared out his stock over the past month or so and no doubt the new stock was brought in at the inflated prices.

but it proves that it pays to shop around.  unfortunately not when you're on foot.
