I love Apache for looks, taste and texture, but I have to say that they are the worst storers of all my potatoes. In sacks in a cool dark garage, they are the only ones that have strong sprouts and loads of roots, so I am cooking them now asap.
Another fact is their strange growth habit: long shoots spidering out from the main plant with tiny potential potatoes on the tips, making a complex interlocking web just below the surface. I got the impression that if I left them there I would have a heavy crop of small potatoes as well as the new ones deeper down, but I needed them and their space.
I have just dug up a volunteer couple of Apaches growing tall among my leeks, and there was the same web starting to spread. I will try them again, but I will plant them further apart, dig them later (to see what happens to the small potatoes) and eat them rapidly.
Hope that helps......
