I use AVG....the paid version ,not the free...never had any problems with it.

I install AVIRA anti virus software on all my client's machines (home/ office use & for local area network stations).

It's German, and like most German things it's VERY efficient & light-footed, using a minimum of system resources to run in the background. When I tested it before adopting it as our default AV software, I found that it was far more efficient than any of the other proprietary software on the market at the time. It discovered infections on a test machine that others like Norton & AVG just ignored.

Highly recommended. I would however opt for the 'pro' versions & not the basic 'freebie' that has limitations (like all freebies).

I've been using AVG (free version) works very well and simple to use. Also find Malwarebytes, free version, excellent.

I use Mcafee from ebay every year - its dirt cheap (anywhere from £6-£10 normally for a 3 user version) and you just get a card with the log in numbers.. sign up to macafee use the numbers to activate the download. Simples.. and it gives you free updates for a year.. then next year do the same.

AVG Free is fine enough as it the AVAST free version.  They do get a bit naggy about updating when they try to get you to buy in but they do a pretty decent job - AVAST would be my choice of the two at the moment. 
Microsoft Security Essentials is also free and is what I am currently using at home for testing although I'll probably switch to Sophos as I get that free.
Norton isn't soo bad these days but they trashed their reputation with IT people and we haven't forgiven them for their bloated apps.
If I had to buy one I'd probably go for Kaspersky as they rate highly and you get to cover three PCs in the licence.  It does very well in real world protection -   There are many other decent AV progs like Trend Micro, BitDefender and F-Secure
Of course AV progs now have morphed into different beasts offering all sorts of extras like Child Protection, IM/Chat protection, email scanning etc most of which are superfluous to many users so you do need to look at what you are buying.

Decided to go for the full version of Avasti for £9.95.  Seems ok for a year.  Certainly do not need child protection, and if I remember rightly my son aged 8 was much more adept at the computer than me and could invalidate anything.   

The teachers at school had no hope.   Every time they updated it he managed to get administrator status within minutes.
