Mostly in the Forum - but equally obstinate, if different, in Word. And in many cases, if you select e you get Edit.

Thank you for listening!

And there seem to be at least 3 ways of getting it - like +130/+0234/+136...........

I'm getting too old for all this!!

Rather than remember the code for each letter, which always seems to involve pressing about six different keys at the same time I tend to use INSERT SYMBOL and then take my pick.

I seem to remember that the old WordPerfect 5.1 had the numbered codes for accents, but I think it's possible in Word to assign your own short-cut codes, but can't for the life of me remember how.

ê - HE HE!!!

Had seen Insert Symbol but could not see a way to it. Persevered & came up with charmap.

Wonder if I can ever find it again?

SO many thanks - hope it might help others.

For those using Open Office it's [insert] [special character] which brings up the character map for the font you are using.

Don't have Open Office. Being stupid again - press Insert - nothing happens. Should it? The key thing to me is the matching font.

Ooops!  Are you pressing the insert key - certainly in Word it's the insert command on the standard toolbar at the top of the page - FILE EDIT VIEW INSERT ...

Click on INSERT, and the dropdown menu should show Symbol ... Click on Symbol and a box pops up with a huge choice of symbols and accented letters.  Click on the one of your choice and click on insert.  This will insert the symbol into your text.  If you don't want any more accented letters, click on Close, otherwise click back into the text and continue typing till you reach the next one you want.

Also, when you highlight the symbol you want it shows the keyboard shortcut, which to me, being more of a mouse person than a keyboard person, it's more of a longcut.

I'm sure Open Office is more or less the same.

Open up Word, type the word accents and all, highlight it, copy it and paste it into the forum text.  Voilá (or should it be voilà or even voilâ.

Try this Tim:
https://www.xplor.org/charactermap.cfm

Here for some Greek:
http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/greeklanguage/a/ASCIIGreek.htm

Here for maths symbols:
http://www.barzilai.org/math_sym.htm

These should work anywhere, being the original ASCII codes developed along with the computer, but apparently not all fonts support all codes.
You can't please all of the people all of the time, but you can't upset them all at once either.
