Almost ex-bat hens, an idea to rescue
« on: November 27, 2008, 19:48:20 »
I have read on this site about lots of people wanting hens and also adopting ex-bats.  My situation is unusual but maybe there is a way of getting layers in the UK for little or nothing.

My OH is a carpenter, working in Brittany, for a company that builds agricultural sheds.  What I never realised is that with battery hens they are layed somewhere, raised somewhere else then transported to the battery factory.  We got our hens for free as the lorry to the factory was full and they were about to be killed as there was nowhere for them to go.  My OH, and several of his workmates, took them home hence we have our gorgeous girls.

I am sure that this is not just a French thing and maybe there is a 'halfway house' looking for an outlet for the hens that are surplus to requirements.

Just an idea but maybe....

Hi Cocopops, do you mean getting the POLs destined for battery duty BEFORE they get there? I've not thought about that. It seems a shame to cull perfectly good POLs.
