Squash dilemma.

Hello,
I'm off on holls on Friday 8). I have a few squash which sound hollow when I tap them. Should I pick them now, or leave them on to ripen more?
Any advice please.

I would leave them on unless they are definitely ripe and there's a possibility of vandalism. :)
One way to tell if they are ripe is to look at the stalk on the fruits. If the stalk is woody and hard they are ripe. If it's still green it's not ready. When I grew Butternut several years ago I didn't know about this and harvested too early. I was most disappointed with it when I cut it open. It was like a hard marrow! ::) Last year my butternut tasted fabulous because I harvested at the right time.

If they are summers harvest them, if they are winters leave them, they won't come to much harm in August in a week or so. ..?? vandals you will have to decide.XX Jeannine
