How much space should I allow for growing one of these?

Three "Dill's" last year covered a lot of plot last year !!! Almost 8 meters wide by 12metres long :o each runner was around 25 feet long
Must admit though i did not prune it like i should have, but boy did it keep the weeds down.
which is one reason i want to compare it to the "Big Moon" variety
Will try to find a photo out and post it some time of the triffids ;D

That's about the size of my plot! I'm having second thoughts now :-\ as I also want to grow Vif Rouge D'etampes and a few squashes. Mind you, if it keeps the weeds down...

not all pumpkins grow this large.
try one of the regular types to keep It more manageable

Undaunted by last year's disaster with the Jack O'Spent Match :'(
I'll be giving it another go, along with Marina de Choggia squash (a surefire bet in the Ugly category) and Acorn squash (because I've just bought one from Asda to get the seeds - they'd run out of Butternut).

Looking at the comments made by various members, there appear to be some 'big guns' on the starting line, I feel I may be left very quickly at the back of the pack ! However, I will be making lots of observations, in the hope of being a worthy adversary at some future point :)

Does anyone have any advice on suitable sowing dates?

Whatever happens, I think this is going to be tremendous fun !

grawrc, I'm sure that most people will be like myself, just growing for fun to see what happens ... seems like most of us haven't actually grown pumpkins before ... certainly for me, the satisfaction will be if the pumpkin manages to keep the weeds down and that I have some tasty dinners ... hope you reconsider.

It's not meant to be serious, just a bit of fun. That's why I suggested different categories, so there's no pressure to grow a giant pumpkin, those wanting to grow the ornamental ones can also join in. :)

There are many different kinds to grow for taste but it is still good fun growing for size. It`s sort of immpressive if you get a good one.
Year one 80lb Year two 138lb. What I really wanted was a 200 lb`er but it didnt happen :-\
Never mind, you just plant grow feed wait and see what happens ;D
All good fun along with all the other stuff we grow at the same time!

I don`t take it too seriously but just hope for a big un. :D

I am only going to grow a couple to see if I can.

I would sooner grow my own than have to pay for one to just make a Halloween pumpkin.

For me this is just an exercise to see if I still have my green fingers after all these years from collage.

I don't even know if my soil is good enough yet to grow any thing never mind a pumpkin.

This year for me will just be trial and error and learn from my mistakes. :)
