Clematis
« on: May 30, 2005, 09:03:23 »
Hi

At a car boot yesterday I bought a clematis "Strawberries and cream" !?

I want to plant it in the border and train it to cover my fence.  Is it best placed in the shade or in the sun ??  ??? Thank you for any help with this.  ::)

Hi Marianne.

Ohhh Im turning green. I wish I could squeeze more clematis in. I looooove them

Generally they like their heads in the sun but their feet cool so try to shade the roots with stones or something like that.

I assume its pink?

I *think* it prefers full sun Marianne, and remember that clems like their roots to be kept cool too, so plant it a couple of inches deeper than the soil level and then i tend to use low growing plants aound it to give the roots shade and keep them cool.

I love clems,  I managed to find a space in the garden yesterday for a new one, so i am on the hunt  ;)

Good luck with yours  :)

Hi Honeybee and Maz !!!

I think I should have put my brain in gear before asking my question. :o ::)

In fact, it is NOT a clematis but a honeysuckle.  I also have a clematis of that name but that one is already in .. ::) :P

So it's the best place for the honeysuckle I was wondering about ! Thanks .. ;D :D ;D

You Nanna Marianne  ;D

Yep, honeysuckles love full sun too  ;D but will also tolerate partial shade.

I have a clematis I put in last november and I thought it died but I have just seen a new shoot poking through.. Do you think bricks round he roots will give it enough shade

Yes, but watch out, the bricks are a perfect habitat for slugs and snails and guess what they just love to eat? Newly emerging clematis shoots!. Worse still snails will strip the bark from round the base of an established Clematis and it then dies back, looks like the dreaded, but rare wilt. A heavy mulch of almost anything is better in many ways.
Gardening is the great leveller.
