Runner beans true from saved seed?
« on: January 14, 2012, 10:54:52 »
I found some dried pods of 'Sunbright' runner beans saved from the plants I grew last year, forgot I had them, and they have been outside all year until yesterday. The seeds are very uniform in colour, size and shape, what are my chances they will come true to type do you think? Typically I had just ordered some more from Tuckers a few days ago...... ::)
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Runner beans are very promiscuous, some are likely to have cross pollinated with other varieties if grown near by. You won't be able to tell until you grow them, might be fun though  :)

I have had some very good results from my own saved seeds but they do tend to be variable.    Bees travel a considerable distance.  You could rogue out any which do not have the yellow foliage.

Yes, that was my cunning plan.....good job the foliage is distinctive! I really like this bean, it is not only decorative, but is a bit later than the other beans so looks good all summer and seems to avoid any moulds/fungi that later sowing are often prone to....
