Utter disbelief!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: October 02, 2011, 13:45:30 »
We met eldest daughter with youngest granddaughter today & we got talking about allotments, we both have half plots & both no dig. I could not believe my ears. OH was talking about getting a manure delivery :) but clearing every bed beforehand. I have a bed almost full of beautiful leeks & he thought he was going to clear those :o. Can you tell who in the brawn & who is the brain ;) ;D.

Excuse me sticking in my oar... but this man would never have suggested clearing leeks away to plaster the plot with manure.  ::)

I may have posted this before but it's not just men who have 'senior moments'. My other half, not only chopped down all the raspberry canes a year early, but also cut down and removed the wild flower area so we lost some of the rarities I'd bought and nurtured.

I was also amused (NOT) to find her way of sowing broad beans was at 9 inch spacing in 8 rows 9 inches apart. This was probably only overtaken in terms of 'not understanding simple instructions' by her planting of garlic cloves. She broke the bulb apart ( as per instructions), but then reassembled each bulb ( for some reason) and planted each one together. I only realised in spring when saw clumps of shoots emerging. This was the first and only year I'd spent outrageous amounts on unusual varieties too.

Just as a matter of interest dj how did the garlic do?

You never know one day these little experiments may come up with something that works so well it'll catch on across the entire country.  ;)

The garlic, once replanted, became larger round bulbs so was no use for the following year. The cloves hadn't split at all.

In terms of experiment, I did ,one year, plant only the larger cloves properly, and the ret about an inch apart. They took up little room and were usable earlier than the proper bulbs and also produced scapes. Don't throw away the small cloves or take up the normal spacing with them.

Good luck to you. Long may your romance garden blossom  ;)

Perhaps it should have been the former.. or maybe both?
