SQUASH RECOMENDATION
« on: September 03, 2008, 22:29:02 »
Hi all i would like some recommendations for which squash to grow

I will be giving a large area to them next year  ( I love squash ;D)

I think I have enough space for 12 bush type plants and 8 to 10 runners / climbers.

I would love to know what are every ones favourite summer and winter squashes. and why ??? for example do they store well, have a high yield or taste really good  ???

I know this is a lot of plants but me my sister and my best Friend buy between us 6 to 8 buttenuts a week, though we are at the moment spending around £ 25 pound a month between us for different variety's at the farmers market once a month :o

please note that this dose not include courgettes or marrows as I already have seeds fore these and know which I would like to grow :)

any advise would be appreciated as I have only grown pumpkins for my kids for halloween up till now

Hi

I am sure you will get lots of different recommendations from everyone.  My personal favourite is Winter Festival as they keep amazingly well, still eating them in May this year as I was sowing the seeds for the new harvest.  They are fairly small so can be used for one meal and very tasty, have used them in all sorts of ways.

I have also grown Crown Prince for the first time this year and can't wait to use them.  I went to Wisley for the apple tasting and they had soup made from Crown Prince to try and it was wonderful so I am really looking forward to making it myself. :)

I'm enjoying growing Uchiki Kuri which is a climber. Have just harvested the first one but understand that I have to leave it for a while before eating.?
