Spuds in Straw

Anyone ever try this or have any comments?

Going to try spuds on my 2nd floor balcony this year to see how it goes, and will dedicate a bag/bin to this method.

Any pointers for a first time spudder?

I've heard of this but have not tried it. one suggestion i would give would be to add a soluble organic fertiliser to the water when ever you water. i have found that container grown spuds benefit from regular watering (IE never let the compost dry out) and feeding.

using a little compost at the beginning and mulching with straw would certainly be a lot less heavy and ungainly to deal with on a balcony setting, good luck and let us know how it works out.

Ill let you know alright.

Good idea re: soluble organic fertiliser.

Actually, I am buying a small wormery today also, so any of the "juice" I get from that will go in too..........assuming I can get it up and running correctly!!

Its going to be tight for space on the balcomy the way I have things planned, but sure its all good!

worm juice would probably work out just fine and it will be free :D.

even with an acre of land you'll run out space its the bane of a good gardener ;)

I've grown in straw, it works, but the blackbirds do like to root around in it!! put a layer of grass clippings over the top. as light can get through the straw.
the liquid from a wormery is NOT worm pee!! they don't pee!! the reason that liquid runs out of a wormery is because the stuff going in the top has too much liquid in it, if this happens, add more shredded paper, and put the liquid back in! If you use the liquid as a food, dilute heavily.
rgds, tony ;)
