It'll be opening in safe mode because there is a problem.  Can you run some checks for problems or viruses from there?  What was the last thing you or he did on the computer before it went into safe mode?

safe mode usually comes on when you have installed a new driver or piece of hardware which isn't working properly. If you have recently done this then boot into safe mode and remove it from the control panel>>add remove programs.
At the next reboot you will either get straight into normal windows mode or you should see a boot menu which will allow you to select normal mode.
