Hi there,
I have made a big batch of what I hoped would be a really good homemade Branston Pickle substitute every year just in case I got the recipe close enough ... and finally this year I've really done it ... I'm so dead chuffed with it I've named it Grandson Pickle and put the recipe up on my blog.
https://johnspiers.bandzoogle.com/life/blog/making-your-own-branston-pickleThe main ingredients I used were carrot, kohl rabi (to replace swede), onion, apple and tomato ... most of which are glutting for me at the moment anyway. I think you could replace the carrot and swede with any root vegetable - mooli, turnip etc. They're needed for the crunchy texture of the "bits". I also used date nectar which is sold in the sweetener section of supermarkets now as the original uses date purée ... I've tried with chopped dates in the past and they're always a bit of a nasty surprise in the finished article! Too sweet!
If anyone fancies having a go at it ... let me know how it goes.
Cheers
Squeezy
