Best homemade plot device
« on: May 20, 2006, 22:26:01 »
I'm not talking storylines.  Having read the thread about good and bad buys regarding plot tools and equipment i wonder what your favourite homemade gadget is. Mine is a childs toy  rake tied on a broom handle that i use to rake the hoed weeds away from my onion rows.  It works a treat.

I have a habit of breaking tools, usually the tines off forks, this means I have a two pronged fork which is ace for digging out Dandelions and the like or working in tight spots,
A broken wooden D handled tool has been converted into a great Dibber for putting in Leeks or making holes for transplants, you can lean on the handle and get all your weight behind it, and still get it back out!

My home made measuring stick, a piece of flat wood marked in 3" portions to 36". For something so simple, it's never far from reach!

pegs made from old wire coat hangers,  a walking stick for a dibber, a tree stump for a table or a seat and scaffy boards - instant work bench, greenhouse shelving, paths, seats.

You really can't beat a good scaffolding plank, but where can I get one mine has just about had it after 13 years sterling service!

building sites. if you ask nicely and give them choccie biccies for their tea break. the odd plank here and there mounts up. i've used them for a raised bed and a coldframe and have another wee pile growing. i can get half planks in the car but he long ones have to get humphed in a barrow. wish i had a big van.

SNAP! Mine is a plank, marked like yours, and abt.6" wide, so useful for making the drills for the seeds to go in. Makes sowing and spacing a doddle (also, wiith seeds of plants I've not tried before, use the guage to identify the goodies from the baddies - anything between the spacing's gotta be a weed :D))

But, Sprottie......was expecting to see your pink dibber again here? Not going to 'launch' it til it's been officially tested?

The parsnip dibber you only use once a year, but the measuring stick is in use all the time.  72"? why step over apple trees, what else? ;D ;D

Currently, my favourite toy is my new stirrup hoe, what I made myself  :D

With my weed plantation, it is getting put to very good use.
The impossible is just a journey away ...
